A few days back we were interviewed by one of Montgomery County’s raising stars and bloggers Dan from Just Up the Pike…I am really excited about his interview here it is ~ While many shoppers spend Black Friday camped out in front of a big-box store or fighting crowds at the mall, there are great finds to be had at our local businesses as well. In honor of Small Business Saturday, I interviewed Bahia Akerele, owner of On the Purple Couch, a consignment store in downtown Silver Spring. Located on Bonifant Street, On the Purple Couch specializes in “high quality, lightly used” clothes, accessories, shoes and even home furnishings. The shop provides “an alternative to the bigger stores,” says Akerele, who lives in Silver Spring with her husband, an immigration lawyer, and their young son. Want to read more

When I first met KiRa I was mesmerized by her eye-catching, sparkling oxfords with the bottom painted in Chalk Paint™ Louis Blue?? The girl had style. I loved the energy she brought with her and we got to working right away. I wanted to learn more about Kira and introduce her to you all…so here goes…
What is your major and what school are you attending? Why did you choose your major? “My major is fashion merchandising and I attend the University of the District of Columbia. I chose fashion merchandising as my major because fashion makes me happy and I wanted to learn about all aspects of it so I can choose the best path for myself.” *******Her skills are going to be a great addition to our team at On The Purple Couch!
How did you find out about the internship opportunity at On the Purple Couch and why did you apply?
“My mom gave me the information about On the Purple Couch and told me to inquire about the internship opportunity. I applied because I was interested in consignment and the entire process.”
What are you hoping to gain from this internship and what are you hoping to contribute to the store?“I am hoping to gain from this internship knowledge about running a business, the in’s and out of consignment and everything about Annie Sloan paint Chalk Paint™.”
*******She’s definitely in the right place. Working so closely with Bahia, the owner and creator of the store, I have already gained so much insight of the behind the scene processes to running a business. No question about it, LOTS of hard work and dedication.
What do you think you can bring to the store that is new? “I think I can bring new innovative ideas to display the paint and also ideas about how to get people to sign up for the classes and also different items to carry in the store.”
How will you apply what you learn in this internship to your future career path? “I will apply what I learn from the internship in my future career path by asking questions and listening and also understanding how home decor and fashion relate.”
What is your favorite outfit of choice?“My favorite outfit of choice: a Fur vest, Jeffrey Campbell heels, high waisted shorts, shredded tights and a studded collar shirt **********Like I said, she knows how to dress!
What sparks your creativity? “My creativity is sparked by street fashion, artwork, DIY projects, and magazines”
As the intern working with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ what are you looking to learn from this product line?“I am looking to learn from the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint all the different ways to work the paint. The techniques used to apply the paint. Knowledge of the colors and mixing colors.”
What is your favorite Annie Sloan color and what did you notice or like most about it?

“Arles is my favorite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ color. I noticed that it was easy to apply and that you get a lot of use from a little paint and you don’t have to strip the piece first.”
